Prague day trips

I will be going with a couple of guys to Prague in June. We are around 30 and all single. We'll be in Prague for up to 6 nights but were curious about any day trip options (or we could stay a night somewhere else.) Budget is a fairly big concern as I'm a teacher (and we all know how much we get paid) and one of the other guys is currently paying most of his money back for grad school. I had suggested Karlovy Vary but Dresden and even Budapest/Vienna are also tempting.

We enjoy culture and history but like most guys, we also like beer and women!

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

You might consider a day trip from Prague to Terezin Concentration Camp. It takes about an hour by bus. The bus departs from the bus depot behind the Florenc Metro Station, and you can purchase your ticket there as well. The buses leave and return regularly throughout the day (approx. every hour or so), which means if you take an early bus (9:00 a.m. as we did), you'll be back in Prague by late afternoon. Don't remember the exact cost, but it was very inexpensive. Plan to spend approx. 4+ hours at Terezin.

Vienna is not very far from Prague but i wouldn`t go for just one day

There are quite a few places in CZ to visit.

Kutna Hora

Cesky Krumlov

Ceske Budejovice

how about a trip to Plzen to see the brewery where Golden Beer was invented, about 90 minutes by train from Prague,a 5 minute walk from the station to the brewery ,a great tour as well as an excellent resturant to have a meal in and probably the best beer you will ever taste.

there is also a very good brewing museum to visit ,a huge cathedral and several very interesting pubs.

if you want more details just say and i can help you with them

I have visited Plzen on 3 ocassions most recently in May 2007.My avatar is a photo of me being poured a beer from the huge barrels in the brewery cellars, this beer is only available to visitors and is superb.

Thanks for the suggestions as they all sound wonderful. We make try and use the weekend train deals and possibly hit up Dresden for a day and then the brewery for another. And yes, any further details about Plzen would be much appreciated as I think all of my friends were highly interested in going there. One of the guys going with us is the son of a brewmaster so that's very appealing to him.

I'm also interested in Terazin but a couple of the guys didn't seem to want to visit there so I may do it on my own. How much time should be allocated for a Prague to Terazin trip?

Thanks guys and keep the suggestions coming!

Disregard my question about time needed to go to Terezin as I see that was already answered. Thanks again.

this will give you details on the tours.

there are trains that leave hourly dierect to Plzen

www.idos.cz

will give you details ,they have an English link. The trains leave about 15 minutes past the hour and takes about 90 minutes from Halavni Nadrazi, but also stop at Smichov Nadrazi if that is an easier train station for you.

there are buses from Florenc bus station but the reason I always recommend using the train is that you will be partaking of a few beers ,trains have toilets ,the buses do not.

when I was last there in May 2007 they were in the process of opening up an older part of the brewery to the tour, and had just recently opened up the new bottleing hall one of the biggest in the world.

If you take the train to Plzen turn right as you get out of the train staion, walk for about 100 meters and you will see the entrance to an underpass ,DO NOT take this route but follow the path to the right ,this will take you over a small rise and up onto a path that will take you over a foot bridge, the end of the footbridge is the entrance to the brewery.once through the gates of the brewery (take some photos of it) the visitor center is about 50 meters or so to the left. There is a good resturant there as well as a very good shop, details of which are on the website posted.details of the Brewing museum are also on this website,it is about a 10 minute walk from the brewery

this link will give you some interesting pubs to visit as well, all within easy walking distance of the brewery, town cetner and railway station.

We are going in May and have planned a trip to Cesky Krumlov which is a UNESCO World Heritage Sight. I did some research and the best way to get there is by bus which takes about 3 hours from Prague. You can actually get the timetables, in English here: jizdnirady.idnes.cz/JRCis.asp?tt=c&cl=E5. There are tours you can take to get there but this by far seems the least expensive option. If that seems to far, another UNESCO site is Kutna Hora which is much closer to Prague.

Go to Czesky Krumlov. It's worth it. There is beer and cheap women. I mean cheap beer and women.

If you are interested in arts, visit Nelahozeves Castle, it is a 40 min train ride and the train stops at the bottom of the castle ground. It is a cozy Remnaissance castle housing the biggest private art collection in Europe (two Canalettos, a Rubens, Veronese, Breughels, etc etc). http://www.lobkowiczevents.cz/nc/index.html

On the castle grounds you will find also Dvoraks birthouse.
